Nutrition Support for Underprivileged Children at Pehli Kiran Schools

Synopsis:

Pehli Kiran Schools (PKS) is an organization dedicated to providing quality education and transforming the lives of underprivileged children in Pakistan through its ‘mobile school’ model. Recognizing the impact of malnutrition on students’ learning abilities, PKS commissioned Mera Maan to implement a nutrition program aimed at addressing this challenge. Over the years, the program has provided fruit and milk to students, and recently, a new initiative was launched to offer a substantial breakfast to 600 students.

Narrative of the Project Description:

Background:

PKS was established in 1995 with a focus on providing education to street children. With the support of donors, the organization has grown to operate 10 community schools, enrolling over 4,300 students and impacting more than 15,000 lives in total. However, malnutrition among students remained a significant obstacle to their academic progress.

Objectives:

– Address the issue of malnutrition among students at PKS and improve their overall well-being and academic performance.
– Provide daily nutrition support to students, ensuring they start their school day well-nourished and ready to learn.

Project Impact:

Through the efforts of PKS and Mera Maan, a nutrition program was initiated, providing fruit and milk to students on a daily basis. This sustained program has positively impacted the lives of thousands of students over the course of a decade. Building on this success, a new initiative to offer breakfast to 600 students further enhanced their nutritional intake and academic readiness. The dedication of PKS to the ‘whole child’ approach, combining quality education with essential life skills and nutrition support, has resulted in a remarkable 90% pass rate on government exams. The continuous support from over 550 donors, contributing over 2 Million USD, has made it possible to sustain these transformative interventions.
